About Family Outreach of Amherst

Family Outreach of Amherst is a program of CHD.

As a small program of a large agency, we share in the savings and benefits of sophisticated fiscal, personnel, technical, and other support services, while maintaining the advantage of being a grassroots, community-based program.

Our History

Family Outreach of Amherst (FOA) was established in 1989 in response to the closing of the Helen Mitchell House, an Amherst homeless shelter for women and children. With funds from the town of Amherst and private donations, the Helen Mitchell Outreach Project was created to follow the families into the community to ensure that they would not become homeless again. In 2001, the name was changed to Family Outreach of Amherst. In 25 years, FOA has gone from providing case management services to those original six families to serving over 600 families a year through our Home Visiting Program, Advocacy, and Information and Referral services and more.

Meet Our Staff:

Laura Reichsman, Program Director – LReichsman@chd.org ~ (413) 548-1270

With a background in Women’s Studies, Laura began her work in human services 25 years ago working at a battered women’s shelter. She has been with Family Outreach of Amherst for over twenty years, serving as its Director since 1997.  In this capacity she has developed new programs in Literacy, Juvenile Court Diversion, Domestic Violence Response, and Home Visiting, while also growing the staff. She is passionate about helping struggling families learn the skills they need to take control of their lives and raise healthy, happy children. With the help of an advisory board, she is responsible for raising close to $100,000 in agency funding each year.

Francine Rodriquez, Program Manager of Community Services – FRodriguez@chd.org ~ (413) 362-1873

Francine joined FOA in August 2005 serving as a Program Manager since September 2010. She is of Hispanic descent and is fluent in both English and Spanish. She loves working with dedicated people who thrive on building stronger communities. With over 10 years of experience in the human services field, Francine is wonderful at working with families and children. She is a single mother to a grown son and grandmother of an adorable granddaughter.

Iris Rosa, Caseworker – IRosa@chd.org ~ (413) 218-0178

Iris has worked in human services for over 12 years.  She enjoys working with families and strongly believes in helping one another not only in the work force but in everyday living.  She is a proud mother of six and grandmother of four.  Iris understands the meaning of “been there” for families.  She was a young Mom facing some of the same struggles that the families she works with face.  At FOA, Iris is able to do what comes naturally to her – reaching out and helping.
