Not Bread Alone, the Amherst-based program of CHD (Center for Human Development) which provides about 13,000 hot meals and groceries to individuals and families in need from throughout Hampshire County is playing host to perhaps Massachusetts’s most steadfast champion to alleviate hunger.
On Wednesday, April 8 at 4:00 p.m. Congressman Jim McGovern, Representative of Massachusetts’s 2nd Congressional District, will visit with Not Bread Alone staff, volunteers and CHD leadership to tour the facility in order to learn more about the impact of this organization’s work to assist in effort to eradicate local hunger.
We are honored to host the Congressman and to have the opportunity to showcase the impact of the work of Not Bread Alone in the lives of local families and individuals in need. According to the USDA, more than 17.5 million American households were food insecure in 2013, meaning that their access to adequate food was limited by a lack of money or other resources. Hunger disproportionately affects the most vulnerable among us – children, seniors and the disabled. Last year, 16 million children, or 1 in 5, experienced hunger. It’s a statistic we at CHD work tirelessly to address and we are so very thankful for the recognition and support Congressman McGovern is giving to our efforts.
