From detention to graduation

“Your Future Starts Now” program gives Springfield students shot at brighter future

“Your Future Starts Now” was a four-week program covering professionalism, entrepreneurship and leadership skills for youth in detention programs with the center. The overall goal of the program was to provide an educational experience while teaching the young men real world skills.

This pilot program was part of an effort to ensure that once the participants leave their respective programs, they don’t turn to a negative direction but continue to work on bettering their future.

At the ceremony, the young men wore professionally fitted suits, from Suit Up Springfield, networked with community members and received certificates of achievement while friends and family cheered on.

Chris Tinson, an associate professor of Africana studies and history at Hampshire College, was the guest speaker during the graduation ceremony. Tinson spoke to participants, community members and guests, leaving them with inspirational words to hold on to.

“We want to focus on what’s possible in our lives, but what’s possible is not always in front of us. So part of our work is to hold onto hope … especially the hope of possibilities and the hope of opportunity in bringing change into our lives,” said Tinson.

“What we’re known for is not necessarily, what we know. So what we need to do is overshadow what we’re known for, by committing ourselves to studying the world around us and allowing ourselves to grow.”
