While technology seems to be all around us, African American youth aren’t always finding as much access to useful technology as they might. Since the ability to understand and apply technology is increasingly important to success in school, work and life, this is an issue that our community needs to be aware of.
Fortunately, one of the most effective ways we as parents can keep our children in touch with useful technology is simple: keep them in school. Technology is part of modern classrooms. It gives children experience using the Internet, conducting data base research, writing papers, and creating PowerPoint presentations. Especially for children from families that lack the resources to provide an up-to-date computer and a high speed internet connection at home, staying in school is crucial for staying in touch with technology.
