SPRINGFIELD – The Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club hosted the 2016 Springfield Dragon Boat Festival Saturday with an estimated 750 spectators in attendance.
With the assistance of the 22 Dragons Organization, the eight-hour event was filled with Dragon boat racing, face painting, martial arts demonstrations, a lion dancer performance, food and snack vendors and many other activities. The family-friendly event was staged at the newly renovated North Riverfront Park and featured activities for all ages.
The annual event is a major fundraiser for the club, said Ben Quick, executive director. The Springfield race, he noted, is one of the biggest in the region along with Boston, Albany, New York and Hartford, Connecticut.
The Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club helps provide scholarships to area students and to ensure residents have access to the Connecticut River.
Organizers said 10 community boats and 10 team boats competed in the event. The 200-meter race was part of an official Eastern Regional Dragon Boat Association event.
