At each home game, the Springfield Thunderbirds, in partnership with CHD, present a “Game Changer” award to recognize someone who has made a difference in the Pioneer Valley community through their selfless acts and dedication.
Mariame Kounta (pictured), a nurse practitioner at CHD’s Certified Clinical Behavioral Health Center in West Springfield, was recognized as a Game Changer at a January 20 Thunderbirds game.
A native of Mali who grew up in the West African country of Senegal, Dr. Kounta is a vital part of CHD’s new Primary Care program—a cutting-edge initiative that integrates medical care, nursing case management, and behavioral health services. She has more than two decades of experience working with society’s most vulnerable populations, including people with developmental disabilities, autism, and brain injuries.
“Dr. Kounta improves the health outcomes of the people she serves by providing them with the best care possible and by advocating for patient rights,” according to her introduction during the game. “She never hesitates to share her journey to inspire fellow immigrants and single moms to thrive in their careers, telling them that if you’re dedicated, motivated, energetic, and flexible, you can achieve great things.”
