CHD Cancer House of Hope Program Director Margaret Toomey “has spent her life helping others thrive,” according to the introduction prior to her being presented with an Age of Excellence Award by Dr. Kathy Martin, president and CEO of the Glenmeadow senior living community.

She was one of nine western Massachusetts individuals over 60 years old honored on September 2 by Glenmeadow at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow for making a positive impact in the region.

“She understands that leadership is not about standing at the center, but creating opportunities, fostering hope, and helping people discover strengths they didn’t even know they possessed,” according to the introduction.

For more than two decades, Toomey shaped students’ lives, teaching culinary arts and coaching softball at Springfield Technical Community College and Westfield High School. In 2019, she found a new calling as program director of the Cancer House of Hope, providing free support, education, wellness services, and compassionate care to individuals and families affected by cancer.

“She serves quietly, tirelessly, and without seeking recognition,” the introduction continued. “Margaret knows that at every stage of life and with every diagnosis, we search for strength. If you cannot find yours, she will lend you hers.”

The other honorees were Jean Canosa Albano, Brooks Fitch, Denise Jordan, Denise Kelcey, Liz O’Gilvie, Paul Picknelly, Gloria Wilson, and honorary recipient Brenda Garton-Sjoberg.
