Embracing Life’s Possibilities
As we honor Disability Pride Month, we shine a spotlight on Zara Mae, a 12-year-old participant in CHD’s All In: Barrier-Free Recreation program. Zara has Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect, but despite the challenges she has faced, her story is one of inspiration and embracing life’s possibilities.
Zara has always dreamed of dancing. Due to her health issues and frequent visits to the hospital when she was little, her parents initially doubted she would be able to participate in activities that other kids her age were able to enjoy. That changed when they discovered CHD All In’s Dance and Movement class, which allowed Zara to make her dreams to dance possible. Since joining dance, Zara has also been involved in All In’s swim program, and has even ventured into rock climbing. She also recently started joining her brother Nate, who is autistic, in All In’s spring fishing program.
Each activity has provided Zara with opportunities to grow, learn, and most importantly, have fun. Zara and others like her exemplify the positive impact of inclusive initiatives, proving that with the right support, there are no limits to what one can achieve. Celebrating Zara Mae’s journey during Disability Pride Month reminds us of the power of community, support, and the unyielding spirit of individuals like her.
