A legacy of change-making

The Barnharts have been with CHD from the beginning. Their work to enhance the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has set the stage for a beautiful partnership.

In 1980, Sally and Philip Barnhart connected with other local families to advocate for more resources for their family members with disabilities.

Through their efforts, they established two supported living residences for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities known as Meadows Homes. They then partnered with CHD to help sustain and grow its services, which have evolved to include 20 homes that serve nearly 80 residents.

Their son, Philip Jr., has been a resident for nearly 40 years.

In addition to their pioneering program work, Sally and Philip established Options Inc., a foundation that provides funding for recreational activities that enhance the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

For over 30 years, Options Inc. has provided this type of support to Meadows Homes, greatly enriching the lives of its residents.

While Sally and Philip Sr. have both passed, Phil Jr.’s brothers Bob and Jim, along with their wives Shirley and Anne, have continued their parents’ legacy with the foundation and are active supporters of Meadows Homes.

Each year, funding from Options Inc. helps purchase adaptive equipment for sports, full divisional memberships to the YMCA, a vacation to Cape Cod for all residents, participation in holiday activities, and an annual picnic.

We are grateful for this generosity that touches countless lives in our community.
