Housing Helpline

As youth homelessness continues to increase, we are committed to providing young adults with the support they need to find housing.

The Hampden County Continuum of Care Coordinated Entry Housing Helpline (413-316-4979), which is staffed by a combined team from CHD and the Gandara Center, is the first step to take for youths aged 18-24 who do not have immediate housing.

Our Housing Navigators are Here to Help

Every caller is assigned a Housing Navigator, who will assist them through the process of finding supports and resources towards getting them housed. Those who leave a message on the Housing Helpline will have their call returned within 24 hours.

Because of the scarcity of housing programs in the Springfield area, Coordinated Entry is a process—but not a guarantee—that we can find housing for all callers. For immediate housing needs, we rely on a network of local shelters, but they are often full. Those seeking housing can also call the Friends of the Homeless shelter themselves at 413-732-3069 to see if they have openings. Youth who are parenting should reach out directly to the Department of Transitional Assistance at 413-858-1000 (Springfield) or 413-552-5400 (Holyoke). They have more options for housing for parents.

We have to use a wait list to ensure fairness in who gets these slots, and the wait list is not first come, first served. Instead, youth are eligible for housing programs on a case-by-case basis, depending on their risk level. Every situation is different, so those receiving services should speak directly to their Housing Navigator.

Wraparound Casework Services

We also assist these youth in accessing their own resources and supports. This can include obtaining documents, such as birth certificates and state ID’s, all the way to helping them apply to programs that pay their first/last/security deposit to move them into housing if they have reliable income.

Navigators are here to help young adults through every step of this process and will remain involved for as long as necessary until they are housed. Those with questions should call the Housing Helpline at 413-316-4979.
